Interdisciplinary treatment involves the collaboration of different dental specialties in improving the overall dental health in patients during orthodontic treatment. These disciplines can include general dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
When inter-disciplinary treatment is needed, our orthodontists will coordinate with doctors of other specialties in order to provide successful, comprehensive treatment. This ensures that all aspects of your oral health are addressed in a coordinated, efficient manner.
It is possible that some adult orthodontic patients will have jaw surgery as part of their treatment because their jaws are no longer growing. If the orthodontist is unable to perform the surgery, the doctor will work with an oral surgeon for treatment. This type of combined orthodontic and surgical treatment is called orthognathic surgery, and it can correct significant jaw discrepancies that cannot be addressed with orthodontics alone.
Patients can experience some bone loss in their teeth during orthodontic treatment, which can hinder appropriate tooth movement. This may require periodontal therapy during orthodontic treatment. Our doctors work closely with periodontists to monitor and manage gum and bone health throughout your treatment, ensuring the best possible outcome.
For patients with existing gum disease or bone loss, interdisciplinary care allows orthodontic treatment to proceed safely and effectively with proper periodontal support.
